3-2-1 Summary

3 Things i Learned:

1. The Archduke Franz Ferdinand and wife were assassinated by a Serbian nationalist.
2. Otto Von Bismark was known as the father of Germany, and planned to isolate France by creating alliances with Austria-Hungary, Russia, and Italy.
3. Serbia was an independent nation at the time of the assassination, not under Austria-Hungary rule.

2 Things that Interested me:

1. The Balkans were known as "The Powder Keg of Europe", because they were made up of different ethnic groups.
2. The Armenian Massacre was the first modern day genocide, murdering over 600,000 Armenians.

1 Question I still have:

1. Did the United States ever get their $33 billion back that we loaned Germany to the reparations back to the allies?

Spotlight On

The Assassination of the Archduke Franz Ferdinand, in Sarajevo on June 28, 1914, was the first spark of World War 1. Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, and his wife, had decided to inspect Austro-Hungarian troops in Bosnia. Sophie was pregnant at the time, with their fourth child. The killer was Gavrilo Princip. He was a member of the blcak hand, which was a secret society committed to ridding Bosnia of Austrian rule. The Black Hand Movement were planning an assassination of the Archduke and anyone who got in the way. Many men were positioned and ready. The first two men did not act. Then a grenade was thrown, but was not harmful. Then pricip fired his gun, murdering the two. This assassination was an act of terrorism, and the beginning of World War I.

Connection Across Time

Racism is a big issue that has been going on forever. No matter where you are or what you are doing there is a chance of something involving a persons race coming up. Racism has many forms, whether because of color, religion, or even gender. There is racism because of color and religion all over the world. There is also a lot of Gender discrimination in places such as jobs today, where men and women do not get the same amount of pay, or hours as each other even though they have the same qualifications. Racism is not right, and that is what the protesters of this silent march were trying to get across. It has to be stopped, and I believe that this silent March helped. Any little gesture towards stopping it will help. Racism has come a long way today from where it used to be. There would be a lot more racism today like there was back then if it weren't for people taking small steps to stopping it.

US Event

The first massive African American protest in American history took place on July 28th, 1917, in New York City. It was a silent parade, in protest of the East St. Louis, Illinois, massacre that happened on July 2nd, 1917; as well as all the violent events that was happening against African Americans around the country. This parade was organized by the NAACP, churchmen and other civil leaders. The riot in East St. Louis began when white men , angry because African Americans were employed by a factory holding government contracts, went on a rampage. Over $400,000. worth of property was destroyed. At least 40 African American were killed; and men, women and children were beaten, stabbed, hung and burned. Almost 6,000 African American were driven from their homes. The African American communities were also upset because while black men were sent to combat in World War I, which the President Woodrow Wilson described as necessary to the survival of democracy abroad; these same men was denied their basic rights here in the United States.

Connection Across Time

The U.S. entering World War I had a great impact. If The U.S. had not entered World War I, the Great Depression would not have been as costly and dreaded as it was. Americans suffered great economic failure during and after the war. The war drained America's military supplies, finances, and manpower, and also businesses and industries on the home front failed. The federal government's money supply was depleted as well. The money was spent on the costly process of running a World War. Our economy as a whole would be better today if we had not entered World War I.

US Events

After the British revealed the telegram to the United States, President Wilson released the telegram as a way of building support for the U.S. entering the war. Wilson called for for the arming of U.S. merchant ships delivering munitions to combatant Britain. Then submarines sank seven U.S. merchant ships and the Zimmerman telegram was published. Wilson called for war on Germany. The United States congress then declared on April 6, 1917.
